After rescuing his daughter from a group of dangerous zealots who were in possession of a powerful book, the Malefecorum, Crallick and his men think that their battles are now over.
However, on returning from their mission, they learn that the Bannathyrran Queens wish to see them. It soon becomes apparent that the zealots were not the only people seeking the Malefecorum and the power it contains.
They wish Crallick, a former Knight-ranger, to come out of retirement and take on one last mission, aiding a former enemy King. Crallick reluctantly agrees. A decision he may yet learn to regret.
